On the night of November 27, a fire broke out at the Tokyo apartment of Kuniko Inoguchi, a 72-year-old member of Japan's House of Councillors from the Liberal Democratic Party, located in Bunkyo Ward. The fire claimed the lives of her husband, Takashi Inoguchi, an 80-year-old international political scientist, and their 33-year-old eldest daughter. On December 1, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department confirmed the identities of the victims and announced that the cause of death was fatal burns.
The fire is believed to have originated near the living room. No evidence of family disputes or unauthorized entry was found, leading authorities to consider accidental ignition as the most likely cause. At the time of the fire, Inoguchi and her younger daughter were out and unharmed. The fire completely consumed approximately 150 square meters of the sixth floor, the top floor of the apartment building, with the living room suffering particularly severe damage.
Takashi Inoguchi was an esteemed international political scientist who held positions such as Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo and President of Niigata Prefectural University. He authored numerous scholarly works, including The Dynamics of World Change, and won the Suntory Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities in 1982. Recognized as a leading figure in his field, he was widely respected in Japan and abroad.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department and the fire department are continuing their investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire.
