大過去とは

大過去は、過去の出来事や行動の中で、さらに過去に起こった別の出来事や行動を表現するための文法形式です。過去のある時点よりも前に発生した過去の事象を示す際に使用されます。例えば、昨日友達にあって、さらに過去に見た映画について話をした場合などに、大過去が使われます。「大過去」の形は、”Had + 過去分詞”を用います。これを過去完了形と言います。※過去完了形については、詳しくは過去完了形の章で紹介します。

大過去の例文

I told my friend about the movie that I had watched a long time ago. ：昨日、私は昔見た映画について友達に話しました。

She had already eaten when I arrived.：私が到着した時には、彼女はすでに食事をしていた。
